Anjali Byce, Chief Human Resources Officer at digital networks company STL puts forward the case for AI’s impact on the role of Human Resources, taking businesses to the next level.
STL is a tech-led organisation with 650+ patents, recognised by BCG as a Top 100 Tech Challenger, and certified as a Great Place to Work for three consecutive years. Digital has been our core DNA at STL. Our digital adoption started with easing out business processes through platforms like Salesforce, SAP, etc., but it gradually became all-pervasive. We are making smart factories by leveraging data into analytics towards Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, we are using digital to solve complex customer problems. Our central R&D team is building AI-based solutions to detect potential threats in the fibre network through sensing applications, we are using tech in HR to eliminate bias, and the list goes on.
The availability of advanced tools and technologies has revolutionised the role of HR in modern workplaces, elevating it from a traditionally administrative function to a strategic partner that contributes to organisational success. As Chief Human Resources Officer at STL, my journey has been an exciting navigation through a rapidly evolving digital landscape. The ever-growing influence of technology, especially Artificial Intelligence (AI), on Human Resource management has been incredibly transformative. Today, HR departments are not just administrative units but strategic partners that directly contribute to an organisation’s success. So, I call us ‘High-Tech Evolutionaries’, and I am working towards enabling my team to exploit the benefits of AI in creating innovative HR solutions.
The transformation of HR through AI
With around 8,000 employees worldwide, our company’s dependence on AI as a crucial tool in HR management is undeniable. Our digital corporate culture empowers our employees to constantly adapt, learn, develop new solutions, push for unrelenting change, and upend the status quo.
Right from the hiring process, we use tech to eliminate bias that may unconsciously creep in. We have adopted an AI tool to stack rank resumes based on the role’s functional and skill requirement needs, thereby bypassing any bias. We have AI-powered employee assessment tools, D&I training, collaboration and communication tools to keep our people engaged. We are also implementing AI for real-time staff pulse checks and an AI chatbot-based listening tool for mood tracking with real-time engagement. This early warning system empowers our HR teams to monitor and promptly respond to changes in employee sentiment. This innovative and proactive approach helps us maintain high employee morale and fosters a positive work environment.
Tapping into this new technology
AI plays a pivotal role in our HR strategy beyond mere process management. We harness the power of technology to incorporate gamification into rewards, recognition, and staff training. By seamlessly integrating this approach into our training programs, we cultivate captivating learning experiences that enhance knowledge retention. Through interactive games and stimulating challenges, we keep our employees actively engaged, fostering an enriching environment conducive to skill development.
In adapting to the changing recruitment landscape, we have transitioned from focusing primarily on job profiles to considering the skills necessary for specific roles. This approach allows us to draw talent from various industries, diversifying our talent pool and ensuring we deploy the right people in the right roles. We have multiple tools to analyse resumes and job applications. This allows us to identify relevant qualifications and skills based on specific criteria, saving time and resources.
Preserving the human touch and fostering a learning environment
As we enjoy the advantages of integrating AI and technology into our HR processes, I remain acutely aware of the importance of maintaining the human element. While AI streamlines processes and aids in eliminating biases, the human aspect of HR is irreplaceable.
I firmly advocate for the idea that technology is a fantastic enabler, but it doesn’t have the power to replace the human aspect of HR. Like I say, “Don’t Tech it Too Far!” The virtues of empathy, understanding, and emotional intelligence are irreplaceable. By maintaining a delicate balance between technological advancements and the human touch, we are transforming our HR functions, setting new industry standards, and driving our mission for inclusive growth.
One of the ways in which we utilise AI is through its integration into our employee training programs. This results in a more engaging and effective learning experience and cultivates a culture of continuous learning. For instance, by using gamified/simulated training, our employees can enhance their skills and knowledge in a stimulating environment that promotes active participation and reinforces the retention of new information.
Continuous learning is paramount in the swiftly evolving world of fibre optics, where novel technologies and techniques are emerging. By encouraging this culture, we ensure we stay ahead of the curve in our industry, armed with a team that is always primed to take on new challenges and seize fresh opportunities.
Envisioning the role of AI in the future
As we look ahead, I am genuinely excited about the boundless potential of AI to drive ongoing innovation within our HR practices. The possibilities are vast and far-reaching. From streamlining administrative tasks to enhancing employee engagement, AI offers a diverse range of tools that we can utilise to strengthen both our team and our organisation.
Above all, I see integrating AI into human resource management as more than just harnessing technological capabilities. It is about leveraging this power to create an environment where our people can truly thrive. This represents the future of HR – a future in which technology acts as an empowering force for individuals rather than the other way around. After all, cracking the people code is blending art, science, and tech to drive organisational success.
