Future skills of HR
Central to the evening was a dynamic and thought-provoking panel discussion hosted by The HR World’s own MD Mike Beesley and featuring some outstanding HR talent: Carolyn Miller, Orlagh Hunt, Jordan James Barry-Bayliss, and Caroline Foster. Together they undertook a comprehensive exploration of the challenges facing HR professionals in the contemporary business landscape, and some of the ways HR leaders can further the impact they have in the workplace.
Emotional intelligence must not be forgotten in the pursuit of AI” – Carolyn Miller
A focal point of the conversation was the changing demographics of the workforce and the consequent challenge this presents. The panellists outlined the strategies that HR leaders could employ to navigate this shifting landscape with the discussion identifying the importance of adapting HR practices to cater to a diverse and evolving workforce, recognising the unique needs and perspectives that different demographic groups bring to the table.
The panellists didn’t shy away from challenging traditional work approaches. They explored how HR leaders can play a pivotal role in driving positive disruption within their organisations. This involved reimagining traditional hierarchies, embracing remote work models, and leveraging technology to create more efficient and collaborative work environments. One conclusion drawn from the discussion was that HR leaders need to be change agents, driving innovation and transformation within their organisations.

The issue of labour shortages also featured during this session. The panelists shared insights and innovative solutions for addressing this critical challenge, emphasising the role of technology, automation, and strategic workforce planning in mitigating the issue. They argued that AI could be leveraged to optimise recruitment processes, identify talent gaps, and foster a more resilient and adaptable workforce.
A key theme that resonated throughout the discussion was organisational agility. Panellists also agreed it was valuable to promote a culture that offers continuous learning, adaptability, and flexibility among employees.
Innovative Talent Strategies
The second panel, brought together leaders from the sponsoring organisations: Ross Crook, John Tarrant, Charlie Stainforth and Alexander Hultin. This session offered valuable insights into the formulation of a company culture that could achieve sustainable talent attraction and retention. In addition to discussing the key elements of such a culture, the panel delved into effective strategies for presenting new HR methodologies to the board which would have a positive impact on their organisation. This involved articulating a clear return on investment (ROI) to demonstrate the tangible benefits and value of adopting innovative human resources practices.
Culture is all about finding authentic people who are willing to be the best versions of themselves”- John Tarrant
The discussion explored the connection between a well-crafted company culture, successful talent management, and the strategic communication required to gain support from the board for evolving HR approaches. It was also clear that a thoughtfully cultivated organisational culture can positively impact on talent retention and attraction, playing a pivotal role in the overall success of talent management initiatives.
Finally it was clear that transparent and persuasive communication strategies are necessary to convey the merits of evolving HR approaches to the board. Handled well, HR can align their strategies with broader organisational goals and objectives.

These panel discussions offered a great deal of talking points for all attendees. Elsewhere the Headshot guy ensured everyone attending could enhance their LinkedIn profile with a high quality professional headshot.
The event was also the launch for the Great HR experiment, in partnership with Cognisess, Human and The Alan Turing Institute’s Data Study Group, this is the opportunity for HR and people leaders to take control, understand and prepare for the future.
